Saving Every Drop of Precious Water

ree

Today, hospitals are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced operation theaters, intensive care units, and diagnostic centers, ensuring precise diagnostics and optimal patient care. Healthcare facilities are significant users of water, and typically hospital laundry is a bigtime water guzzler. Adopting better water management practices can have a significant impact, especially in populated areas where water treatment and distribution and wastewater treatment infrastructure are often barely capable of meeting demand.

A facility may undertake a water conservation project using internal resources by conducting regular employee awareness programs on smart use of water resources and adopting best practices through stringent measures and advanced water treatment technologies. The companies can also choose to hire external specialists to analyze equipment retrofit and replacement projects since new technologies are constantly coming into the market and their true effectiveness is difficult to ascertain from product literature.

Water can be taken from the reject side of the linear accelerator heat exchangers and pumped to the facility’s cooling towers and reused for evaporative cooling. Reject water produced in the reverse osmosis (RO) process can be reclaimed for non-miscellaneous potable water use or in the cooling towers. Aerators are fixed in taps across facilities to moderate water usage. Periodic checks are done to detect any leaks in taps or pipes, overflowing tanks, and dysfunctional cisterns, and immediate fixing is done by a professional team. A sewage treatment plant is a must in healthcare facilities to treat and repurpose sewage water for toilet flushing and gardening. Rainwater harvesting systems are designed to ensure that every drop of water is conserved and reused. This is supplemented by recharge of the groundwater table through percolation pits in the stormwater drains.

Every day, medical and industrial laundry use a lot of water to handle vast volumes of textiles. By using high-efficiency technology, recycling systems, optimized wash cycles, and regular washing machine maintenance, they can lower water use. Laundries can significantly increase water saving by combining specialized solutions with in-depth instruction on best practices.

‘A healthy future for all.’ being the cornerstone of the healthcare industry, sustainable practices like conservation of resources play a big role in driving consistent excellence, innovation, and a spirit of care.
